Crowns, or what some people call “caps,” are usually made of porcelain, and they are placed on the top of a tooth. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the weakened tooth. Crowns are used to restore a tooth’s strength and appearance following a root canal, and they are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, or prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse. They can also be used aesthetically to change the shape or color of a tooth.
